Welcome Message[edit]

Welcome[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! -- Apisite (talk) 09:06, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

In the entry for xoá bỏ, I accidentally put in the definition for another word. I regret this mistake and have reverted my edits. Will there be consequences? Sinotransition (talk) 14:01, 23 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for creating new entries for Vietnamese! Don't worry, every edit can be reverted and therefore corrected. But every change of an entry can be seen in the revision history of that particular entry. --ChemPro (talk) 14:22, 23 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Your audio files[edit]

Thank you for making an effort to create audio files for Vietnamese entries. But I have to say, as a Northener, that I couldn't identify the accent you used in your audios. Could you please tell me which accent you used? Here are the following audios I'm concerned with:

  • (file)
  • (file)
  • (file)
  • (file)

I live in HCMC. The accent is probably central. It's not southern. Sinotransition (talk) 14:56, 23 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
After it has been confirmed that your audios are indeed spoken in a central dialect, could you please tell me in which province exactly this dialect is spoken? --ChemPro (talk) 00:36, 24 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
I spent my childhood in Đà Nẵng, then traveled all over Vietnam for study and work. I hope this gives more clarity. Sinotransition (talk) 08:11, 24 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
You don't usually hear my accent on TV and the internet, but it is not an unusual accent to have. Sinotransition (talk) 08:13, 24 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
I'll label all my audios as South Central Coast from now on. Sinotransition (talk) 16:17, 24 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much for your contribution! --ChemPro (talk) 00:17, 25 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

CFI for some compound words[edit]

Are "đánh đập" and "mắng chửi" suitable for inclusion? They are probably SOP but they are idiomatic. Sinotransition (talk) 17:25, 23 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

I recommend you to put your question on the discussion page of User:PhanAnh123. He is an expert in the Vietnamese language and he's been active in the Wiktionary for many years. --ChemPro (talk) 00:10, 24 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
