optional russian stress mark via CSS[edit]

Hi Stephen. I've just created a template that allows us to insert an optional stress mark in Russian words. By default it's turned off since most fonts result in an ugly display. But if you add .ru-stress { display: inline } to your custom CSS file you will see them. People who either have good fonts, or want to see the stress marks regardless can enable them. To insert the optional stress mark in a wiki page you can use {{ru-stress}}. As an example, I've added it to рабочий. Now I'm not suggesting you spend the next months adding them to every Russian page, but you might consider adding it to future articles. Please let me know of any other language-related enhancements you think might be possible via CSS. — Hippietrail 02:23, 10 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I’ll try it out. —Stephen 07:11, 10 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
I tried it but I can’t get it to work. In [[рабочий|рабоTemplate:ru-stressчий]], I don’t see any stress mark. After adding the line to my monobook, I did press Ctrl-F5, but it didn’t help. I’m in Firefox, so perhaps it only works in IE. —Stephen 07:20, 10 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yes, in IE I can see the accent, but it looks terrible. But I really can’t use IE anymore, because some setting has changed in it and it no long allows me to type Unicode in the address bar ... if I try to go to the рабочий page, for example, рабочий becomes ??????? and I go to the main page. I haven’t been able to fix the problem, so I have to use Firefox instead, and the accent doesn’t show up in Firefox. But if it did show up, I assume it would look as bad as it does in IE. —Stephen 07:32, 10 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
That's odd. I guess Firefox can't handle CSS in combining characters well. True it looks bad in IE but it looks bad whether it's optional or always there. It's the font and possibly Unscribe that make it look bad. But it wasn't intended to make it look any better, just to be an option for people that like to see it even if it's ugly, or for people that have fonts that can show it in a non-ugly way. I wish I could help with your IE problem but I don't have any ideas )-: — Hippietrail 21:58, 10 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
