User talk:Ultimateria/Archive 1
Welcome![edit]
Hello, and welcome to Wiktionary. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
- How to edit a page is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or make a hyperlink. The Wiktionary tutorial is a more wordy, multi-page document that helps you through those same formatting issues, and also touches on a couple of other issues relevant to editing.
- The document What Wiktionary is not may be of interest. In particular, if you've edited Wikipedia in the past, you should note that Wiktionary is not an encyclopedia and does not have Wikipedia-style page titles.
- How to start a new page is a technical guide to, well, how to start a new page. But you'll also want to look at our guidelines for how to format an entry (what goes where) and our criteria for inclusion (what can be included), which are our two main policy documents. (You can get a feel for how to format an entry by looking at existing entries.)
- The Sandbox is a safe place for testing markup.
- The FAQ has, of course, some frequently (and some infrequently) asked questions, and their answers.
I hope you enjoy editing here! By the way, you can sign your comments on talk (discussion) pages using four tildes, like this: ~~~~
, which automatically produces your name (or IP number if you're not signed in) and the current date and time. If you have any questions, then see the help pages, add a question to one of the discussion rooms or ask me on my talk page.—msh210℠ 22:25, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Accelerated plurals[edit]
Sure, go to WT:PREFS and check 'Add accelarated creation links for common inflections of some words.' as well as 'Use the preferences on this page. The links should turn green for the plurals. But there are some problems with the way the acceleration for Spanish is set up. For masculine-feminine nouns, create the feminine entry using {{es-noun-mf|m=foo}}, rather than using {{infl}}
. Same with adjectives. Nadando 23:28, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
- That's the last place I would have looked. Thanks a ton! Oh, also, what about nouns forms that are also adjective forms? Ultimateria 23:36, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
- The way I've done it is to click on the adjective accelerated link and copy the text, then go back and click on the noun link and paste it in. Nadando 23:43, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks! Ultimateria 23:44, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
- Oh, also I have a list of nouns without plurals if you're interested- User:Nadando/missing plurals. Nadando 23:47, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
- Heh, I was actually going to ask you if you could use some help on that. Ultimateria 23:48, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
Context[edit]
Instead of removing context tags, please add the language, such as lang=ja for Japanese. --EncycloPetey 05:04, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
- Oh, right. I tried to make it non-category somehow, and I couldn't remember "|lang=__" Ultimateria 05:07, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
Spanish verb forms[edit]
Did you know about User:BuchmeierBot? Feeding the bot is a lot less work than adding all of those verb forms by hand. Nadando 02:58, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
See also[edit]
Many people object to 'See also' as a header, since it doesn't convey any information about the relationship between the words. 'Related terms' or 'Derived terms' is always preferred if possible. Nadando 22:31, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
Admin?[edit]
If you are interested in administratorship, I am willing to start the voting process. Equinox ◑ 02:46, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

- OK - you should now have some new buttons. Please add an entry for yourself at Wiktionary:Administrators. Cheers. SemperBlotto 10:53, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
- Could you use "rollback" now, instead of "undo" - it marks the vandalism as patrolled, as well as undoing multiple edits at the same time. Cheers. SemperBlotto 22:33, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks! I already got to try it out. : ) Ultimateria 22:38, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
- One more thing.... When deleting a page, you'll sometimes want to remove form the automatic deletion summary the contents of the page. This is necessary when there's personal info in there, but you might wish to do it other times also, just so vandals can't gloat over their handiwork (as viewable in the deletion log).—msh210℠ 23:06, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
- You've got a good point. Be sure to tell me if I need to do anything else differently. Ultimateria 23:13, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Feed bot[edit]
Hi there. When and if you make any new Esperanto entries that have forms that need making, please let my bot know at his feed page :) User:Darkicebot/Feed. Cheers, and thanks in advance, Razorflame 00:15, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
- I'm glad it's up and running! I actually have a question about the pages created. I really hate to gripe about aesthetics, but for consistency (to match English entries), could you make each entry start with a capital letter and end with a period? Ultimateria 01:08, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
- I wish I could, but it is part of an intricate template, so I therefore cannot format them any differently. I'm sorry about that :(. Cheers, Razorflame 01:18, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
- A note, though. You don't need to feed the bot uncountable nouns. Just use {{subst:new eo form|tekni|on}} for the plural teknion and so on. Cheers, Razorflame 02:05, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
- Okay. I don't know why I added kribagxo. I try to add uncountable nouns' accusative pages since it takes the same time to create as to feed the bot, but I'll keep this in mind in the future. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Ultimateria 02:12, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
- No problems. Let me know if you need any help. You know where to find me :) Razorflame 02:32, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Hyphenation and context labels[edit]
Hi there Ultimateria. When you make Esperanto pages, could you please remember to include the hyphenation as well as any context labels that would fit with the definition? For example, floemo could have a botany context tag on it because it has to do with botany. Anyways, keep up the good work, Razorflame 20:01, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
- Honestly, I hate adding the pronunciation because it's so subjective. Opi had this to say about it. As for the context tags, I usually add categories to my pages, but I usually use them only when the word has more than one context, or it is an uncommon word (so I guess I should have changed that for xylem and phloem). Ultimateria 20:19, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
- No problems. I'll add the hyphenations to the entries you make, then. Cheers, Razorflame 20:23, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
Universala vorto[edit]
Hi there Ultimateria. I don't really see a use for this tag, do you? Maybe we should bring this to RFDO? Anyways, let me know what you think. Cheers, Razorflame 21:16, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
- I agree. It's not really helpful to know how a word was documented over 100 years ago. It seems pointless to me. Plus, I got it confused with the Akademia Vortaro and have been using it wrong. I'll let you nominate it since you suggested it. Ultimateria 21:25, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
- I've nominated it as you suggested. Cheers, Razorflame 21:47, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
I can't find where this word is used to denote the wood from an oak tree. Maybe I am missing something, but are you sure about this definition? Razorflame 00:52, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
- w:eo:Ligno has it in a list of "ĉefaj uzataj tipoj de ligno", and w:eo:Kverko says, "la malmola, fortika ligno de kelkaj specioj estas uzata por ĉarpentado..." Ultimateria 02:53, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
- Yep, I saw that earlier, after you made the page, but before you answered this. Thanks for clarifying, Razorflame 02:54, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
hi[edit]
hi i have a problem here and i need help
General Lee Wang 17:48, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
- Okay, what's your problem? Ultimateria 17:49, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
There is a riot coming down to my house and i say something bad to them, the people are carrying torches and pitchforks, and now... what should i do? Should i take out my shotgun and kill the rioters or hide in my bomb shelter with my inbred son?
General Lee Wang 17:54, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
Hello, do you know if 笛 can also be read as "bue" (ぶえ) in Japanese? That reading is not given at 笛, only fue (ふえ). 24.29.228.33 20:12, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
- Actually, I'm not sure. I only meant to fix the page つちぶえ, and to tell the truth, I didn't even notice that the "fue" was actually "bue". I have no idea how to read kanji except for a few basic ones, so I can only assume that it can be read as "bue" since it appears in 土笛. Sorry I'm not of much help when it comes to Japanese. Ultimateria 20:21, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
Crap, lol..[edit]
How the hell did Yair rand get it to do the right thing...*sighs*. Someone really needs to redesign the eo-proper noun template to make it work with multiple word Proper nouns...Razorflame 03:46, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
- He just did it as usual but added "|cat=proper nouns}}" at the end. I guess a rewrite is in order if we're ever going to get Flava Maro to work. I say "we", but I should stay away from templates. Ultimateria 03:52, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
- I, too, should stay away from templates because I don't know the intricacies of templating yet. Razorflame 04:48, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
Category:eo:Fish[edit]
Why did you delete the translations from here: Category:eo:Fish? It's useful for learning vocabulary to have all the translations on one page so people don't have to click on every single item. --Gilward Kukel 20:13, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
- It's not much trouble to click on those links if you ask me, but the reason is actually that categories are self-updating and -sorting, but if someone were to add another page to Category:eo:Fish, they would have to edit the category again for every page added. It would just take a lot of time. Ultimateria 20:32, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
- It is much trouble to click on every page in a category, especially when there are many pages. I know how categories work but I think the list of translations should be put back. It does not matter if it is not synchronized. --Gilward Kukel 20:50, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
- Go ahead and undo my edit then. I was just confused as to why you put it there, but now I understand your reason. Ultimateria 20:52, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
Translations made[edit]
Hey there Ultimateria. I added like a hundred translations in Esperanto a few hours ago, and I just wanted to let you know that you are free to go back through my contributions to locate the red linked translations that I added and add them yourself. You don't have to do it if you don't want to, but I thought that it would be a good idea. Amikas, Razorflame 00:30, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks, I just bookmarked it for later. I've been very busy lately, but I'll add a make a few pages when I can. Ultimateria 00:35, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, I went a little crazy and added too many, lol ;). Also, if you add Ido entries, I made a template
{{new io-p form}}
that, if the plural form of an Ido noun is already created because of some Italian inflected entry, you can just pop in {{subst:new io-p form|Base word}} and it will include everything that you need. It even includes a nice little line break to separate the Ido and Italian sections :).
- Yeah, I went a little crazy and added too many, lol ;). Also, if you add Ido entries, I made a template
- Also, a few days ago, both me and Yair rand created
{{eo-card form}}
and{{eo-ord form}}
for quickly adding ordinal or cardinal number entries :) Anyways, hope to see ya around, Razorflame 00:50, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
- Also, a few days ago, both me and Yair rand created
Plantillas[edit]
Gracias, lo tendré en cuenta. No suelo hacer palabras nuevas muy a menudo. --Ikatz 00:34, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
Question[edit]
Hey there Ultimateria. What online or offline sources do you use to verify the translations for the Esperanto words that you find? I use several different sources, including several offline English to Esperanto dictionaries, as well as several online single translation websites. I've been finding that it is becoming more and more difficult to find translations that haven't already been made since we've been making them fairly often. Therefore, more uncommon translations will eventually have to be found, which I am not looking forward to. Kanpai, Razorflame 00:12, 21 January 2010 (UTC)
- I like Reta Vortaro (especially since it tells whether verbs are transitive or intransitive) and I use this dictionary for quick reference and it gives tons of results for each word. The dictionary at lernu.net is okay, and I occasionally use interlanguage links of Wikipedia pages, but I keep in mind that an exact translation is rare. If you want more translations to make, subsribe to lernu.net's word of the day email. It has some obscure words, the definitions are in Esperanto, and there are example sentences for each sense.
- Unfortunately, I've never been able to find any Esperanto dictionaries at any local bookstores. I've considered buying one online, but I've never been able to decide on one. Ultimateria 00:39, 21 January 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the link to Reta Vortaro. That is one that I haven't used yet and it has already helped a bit. I use this quite a bit because it has been a very good resource for me. I also use the Esperanto Wikipedia, as well as a few other sources. I'll probably start using RetaVortaro more now because of how decent I have found it to be. Razorflame 00:46, 21 January 2010 (UTC)
This edit[edit]
Hi there Ultimateria. This edit is something that should maybe be incorporated into the {{new eo form}}
template. What do you think? Razorflame 22:46, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
- I thought I already asked Conrad to do something about it, but I guess he just needs to be reminded. Ultimateria 22:51, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
- Can you also remind him to look at the note that I left on his talk page about the User:Razorflame/Ido/NEW page, too, while you are at it? Thanks, Razorflame 23:35, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
Hyphenations?[edit]
Awww, you were doing so well with the hyphenations :( And you were also doing so well with the {{l}}
for the synonyms, derived and rel terms :( Do you think that maybe you could include those in your future entries? Thanks, Razorflame 01:47, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
- Hyphenations are just too subjective. You could almost always argue where the syllables end, and I can never decide where that is. Pronunciation is enough for me. I honestly forgot about
{{l}}
, though. Ultimateria 02:08, 14 February 2010 (UTC)- Yeah, you are right about the hyphenations being subjective. I'll stop adding them to my entries that I make from now on, but the
{{l}}
thing is a format that I've been using on all the Esperanto pages that I've been making for quite some time now. It would be good to keep that standard throughout the entire language =D Cheers, Razorflame 02:13, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, you are right about the hyphenations being subjective. I'll stop adding them to my entries that I make from now on, but the
re: block[edit]
With a name like Scrambledchlamydia and edits like those, feel free to indefinitely block right off the bat. The user name alone warrants it. - [The]DaveRoss 02:33, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
- Gotcha. I'm still pretty hesitant about indefinite blocks though. Ultimateria 02:57, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
Proto E[edit]
Ah okay I was not aware of that, thank you. It seems interesting though, how we have documented these transformative intermediate stages between more established and recognized words. Why do we mention them at all though, if we won't give them a page? I'll read the discussion since perhaps it answers this. Ty 04:58, 17 February 2010 (UTC)
Woah![edit]
Did this get fixed yet, because that would be a big problem if it hasn't already been fixed. Cheers, Razorflame 20:33, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- Yes. It turns out that tigro didn't have a Noun header. By the way, I've been meaning to ask you about the capitalization of Atlantika salmo. In an Esperanto Wikipedia search, I don't see it capitalized or in an Esperanto Google search. Ultimateria 20:39, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- Hmm...yeah, I think I only capitalized it because it was capitalized in the English entry, but yeah, it should probably be lowercase. I'll fix it. Razorflame 20:41, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
Err, pintones? Mglovesfun (talk) 10:33, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
- Yep. Thanks for pointing that out. Ultimateria 21:51, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
blatant[edit]
Why did you undo the edit that I made to blatant? I gave an example of blatant vandalism. Keyboard mouse (talk) 03:27, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
- We don't personally attack other users in entries. You can say that someone is a vandal on your user page, but leave it out of the mainspace. Not to mention it's just bad etiquette. Ultimateria 19:41, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
uh...why the revert? 81.68.255.36 11:54, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
- My first impression was that it was spam, to be honest. It looked like nonsense to me ("you know what I meant", but I did not hehe" looked especially spamm-y). I just now watched the video, and my conclusion is that she was making a weak attempt at a joke, then trying to cover up the lack of funniness by pretending that "clean" has another (most likely sexual) meaning. And I'm 99 percent sure that "clean" doesn't have any sexual meanings. I do apologize for ignoring you, though. If I had just looked at your contributions, I would have seen that you weren't a vandal. I admit I have a bias against anonymous users. By the way, that video was actually a fascinating cultural lesson... Ultimateria 21:28, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
Haha, I laughed out loud because of your learnings about Japanese culture. Anyway, thanks for answering my question. About the bias against anonymous users, it's no problem really. Most of the time it's legit and (btw: I have a hangover and cannot come up with the English words haha) many of the anonymous users do spam etc. I understand that so I always take my time with people that revert my contributions/questions. :) Have a good day! 81.68.255.36 09:50, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
