A Frisian name of debated origin; possibly a short form of Germanic compound names beginning with *ob- "industrious" or Old High German agil- (“sword”) (etymologically allied with Latin acūtus, Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱ- (“sharp”)). The Scandinavian variant Ove may have Old Norse origin.
