Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Compound of vijf (five), the plural form of heer (lord) and the plural form of land (land). The area was named after the lords of five fiefdoms (Arkel boven de Zouwe, Ter Leede, Hagestein, Vianen and Everdingen) who decided to collectively manage the water infrastructure of the region covered by the current municipality in 1284.

The neighbourhood is named after the area.
