- (Weert) First attested with certainty as werd in 1155. Perhaps derived from Old Dutch werde (“land next to water, riverine island”), although there are no large rivers near the city. See also Limburgish Wieërt.
- (Meerssen) First attested as werde in 1335. Derived from weerd (“land next to water, riverine island”).
