Orthography[edit]

Wiktionary handles the standard orthography of Afar, which differs from the one given by Bliese (1981) and a few other sources:

Aa Bb Cc Dd Ee Ff Gg Hh Ii Jj Kk Ll Mm Nn Oo Pp Qq Rr Ss Tt Uu Ww Xx Yy Zz
/a/ /b/ /ħ/ /d/ /e/ /f/ /ɡ/ /h/ /i/ /d͡ʒ/ /k/ /l/ /m/ /n/ /o/ /p/ /ʕ/ /ɾ/ /s/ /t/ /u/ /w/ /ɖ/ /j/ /z/

Pitch marks shouldn't be given in pagenames, but should be given in the header. For long vowels, the pitch mark should always be given on the first vowel (lée, not leé)

Nouns[edit]

The headword of a noun should be given by using the template {{aa-noun}}, which automatically requests pitch marks and gender. It also provides a possibility of giving the feminine equivalent, singulative and the singulative's gender, plural and the plural's gender.

For plural forms, the template {{aa-npf}} should be used.

Collectives should at all times be preceded by {{lb|aa|collective}} and, if applicable semantically, given in the plural (so gáala should read "camels" rather than "camel").

The declensions of nouns and noun plurals should be given using {{aa-decl}}.

Verbs[edit]

All verb definitions should be preceded by either {{lb|aa|transitive}} (for transitive verbs), {{lb|aa|intransitive}} (for intransitive verbs) or {{lb|aa|stative}} (for adjective verbs).

The conjugation of verbs should be given using {{aa-conj-table}} or a derived template (see Category:Afar verb inflection-table templates).

Derived verbs (like causatives and autobenefactives) should be provided with {{aa-derverb}} in the definition line.
