Igbo is a Niger-Congo language spoken in Nigeria. This page details standard practice to be followed on all Igbo entries.
Spellings and diacritics[edit]
The underdot vowels ⟨ị ọ ụ⟩, and nasal ⟨ṅ⟩ should be used in page titles, but the tones should be marked in the headword line. Low tones are marked with the grave accent (`), high tones are left unmarked, and downstep is marked with a macron (¯). In the IPA, downstep is indicated with the symbol ꜜ preceding the downstepped high tone.
The Ọnwụ orthography should be used in all entries, rather than the "New Standard Orthography" (as used in Echeruo's dictionary), which uses ⟨ö⟩ and ⟨ü⟩ for ⟨ọ⟩ and ⟨ụ⟩, ⟨c⟩ for ⟨ch⟩, and ⟨ñ⟩ for ⟨ṅ⟩.
The spelling used in Standard Igbo should be where an entry is lemmatized, if possible, with dialectal forms linking to that spelling.
