Wiktionary talk:Votes/2015-12/Install Extension:Variables

This request is exceedingly unlikely to be accepted. You should read the discussions at phab:T65324 and phab:T113859. The latter task is a request from English Wikiversity a few months ago to have this extension installed. I have CC'd C. Scott Ananian (cscott) and Brad Jorsch (Anomie) on that task, so they may have some input as to the current situation. This, that and the other (talk) 03:06, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

Neither phab:T65324 or phab:T113859 were actually rejected AFAICS. In phab:T65324, some people said that the proposal was rejected 7 years before (bug 7865) but some argued that the software changed since then and the extension could either be installed or someone could make a simpler version of it. Last message: "The extension was never installed, so I'm not sure why this is marked Resolved." You then marked it as declined and "up for grabs." I went ahead and marked it as open, I hope it's okay but revert if you want. phab:T113859 is still open, too. --Daniel Carrero (talk) 04:31, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

Krenair explained that it was marked Resolved due to a quirk in the way bugs were imported from Bugzilla to Phabricator: Any bug that was marked as a DUPLICATE in Bugzilla got imported to Phabricator as "Resolved", regardless of whether the bug of which it was a duplicate was marked RESOLVED in Bugzilla. In this case, phab:T65324 was marked as a DUPLICATE of phab:T9865, which is marked as Declined. So I don't think reopening that bug makes any sense, particularly as discussion is ongoing at phab:T113859. This, that and the other (talk) 05:10, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

Visual editor is mentioned specifically as something that breaks with this extension. But I have no problem ditching visual editor in favour of this. —CodeCat 23:37, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

Wikia seems to have their Visual Editor and Variables cooperating just fine. IDK if it's the same Visual Editor, but at any rate they seem to have no problems. —suzukaze (t・c) 23:40, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

Looking at it again, it seems to work in a very iffy way though. Having

* 1 {{#vardefine:lang|en}}
* 2 {{#var:lang}}
* 3 {{#vardefine:lang|ka}}
* 4 {{#var:lang}}

directly on a page results in

• 1
• 2 en
• 3
• 4 ka

normally but

• 1
• 2
• 3
• 4

in the Visual Editor. Using variables within one template seems to be fine, but recalling variables across templates seems to be half-baked. (See, I don't normally use the Visual Editor, nor do I use Variables copiously...) —suzukaze (t・c) 01:45, 24 December 2015 (UTC)
