Discussion[edit]

Header title[edit]

Would "Example media" be better than "Examples"? I don't want to cause confusion with "example sentences". --Bequw¢τ 00:44, 20 December 2009 (UTC) Possibly "Illustrations" as Visviva suggests. --Bequw¢τ 08:22, 20 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, either of those is better IMO.—msh210 17:24, 21 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hmm... Illustrations sounds like images/pictures to me, so I dislike that idea. --EncycloPetey 17:42, 21 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, it would be especially weird for sounds. Maybe "Example media" then?...--Bequw¢τ 01:05, 22 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Media is pretty general, but I think people who see it don't usually think of plain text, which we'd want to include (as for grammatical examples of words like split infinitive). So it may not be the best choice, actually.—msh210 20:14, 22 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
What about "Samples" or "Representations"? --Bequw¢τ 19:02, 23 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well, DAVilla has supported conditioned on the header's being "Samples" ("or the like" as he puts it, but presumably not "Examples"). Ruakh and I have also mentioned in our votes that we're not happy with "Examples"; I explicitly also allowed for "Samples". Perhaps we should just switch it midvote to "Samples", inform all voters (except me and DAVilla) so they can confirm or change their votes, extend the time of the vote, and continue from there?—msh210 16:09, 18 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
A clear consensus does seem to be emerging for "Samples" instead of "Examples" which I'm fine with. Should I just withdraw this one or modify and re-notify (some people don't like votes modified in the middle)? --Bequw¢τ 01:42, 19 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
All the "support" voters except yourself have stated that they'd vote in support of "Samples" also, so I think it would just waste their time to start over. But that's just mho.—msh210 15:42, 19 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I'll switch it to "Samples" and extend it. I'm leaving the vote page title the same just for ease. --Bequw¢τ 03:05, 20 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Alternative option[edit]

Image galleries are the only "example"/"sample" media where we have enough right now to left-aligned a block of them. Since there was no consensus to add an additional header, I think the best place for the galleries is in =See also= sections (though if they look fine at the base of the PoS I won't move them). If we get a lot of other types of media, maybe we can revisit the issue. --Bequwτ 05:39, 2 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Come to think of it, I don't see why the "Citations subpage" (or whatever it's called) at each entry, which AFAICT is all but never used (and there being already per WT:ELE an optional L3 "Quotations" header), couldn't be renamed for "Examples" or "Samples" and used for media as well, but possibly that's just a rookie's notion. --Thrissel 00:08, 6 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well, the citations page is for samples of the term, whereas what's under discussion here is samples of the term's referent.—msh210 16:38, 8 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
It's not actually a bad idea. The problem is that people want the samples to illustrate the entry, wheras we extradite citations beacuse we assume most people are not going to find a million citations very interesting. Conrad.Irwin 16:41, 8 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the answers, yes, both make sense to me. Seemed to me nobody was finding it interesting filling the pages with citations either, but then that may change (before coming here I'd never have believed how many people were interested in etymologies). And upon consideration I can't think of an elegant way of telling a casual reader there are pictures, so to say, on the wayside. --Thrissel 18:00, 9 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
