Romanian[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Maybe from Vulgar Latin *accēnāre (to wait until the evening), originally meaning "to wait until the time of dinner". For the rhotacism of the intervocalic nasal, compare fereastră from Latin fenestra; however, this is uncommon in Romanian, especially without cause of dissimilation. Cf. also the related cină, which did not undergo rhotacism.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /a.t͡ʃiˈra/
  • Rhymes: -a
  • Hyphenation: a‧ci‧ra

Verb[edit]

a acira (third-person singular present aciră, past participle acirat) 1st conj.

  1. (regional) to await, to hope for
  2. (regional) to lurk, to lie in ambush
