akʼis (plural akʼisóó)
- older sibling (of the same sex)
- older maternal cousin (of the same sex)
- friend (chiefly of the same sex)
- sikʼis ― my friend
Usage notes[edit]
Traditionally, men and women could marry but could not just be friends. This is why the word for "friend" means of the same sex. However, in modern times, men and women can now just be friends, so this term may be applied to friends of the opposite sex.
