Etymology[edit]
Pronunciation[edit]
Noun[edit]
anmoch m (genitive singular anmoich, no plural)
Adjective[edit]
anmoch
- late (in the day)
- Tràth chun na h-abhainn is anmoch chun an locha. ― There's a right time for everything. (literally, “early to the river and late to the loch”)
- Tha e anmoch a-nis ― It's late now.
Usage notes[edit]
- Anmoch refers to a neutral temporal state, whereas fadalach is used for "late" in the sense of "happening after an intended time". For instance, Dhùisg mi gu fadalach ― "I woke up late" implies having woken up after the intended time, whereas Dhùisg mi gu h-anmoch ― "I woke up late" implies waking up late in the morning, or later in the day, but not in relation to intention.
