Etymology[edit]
From Ancient Greek ἀπέλλαι (apéllai), plural form of ἀπέλλα (apélla, “fold, fence for animals”); compare Laconian Ancient Greek ἀπελλάζω (apellázō, “to assemble”).[1][2]
