Azerbaijani[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Perhaps doublet of dialectal arxanc (“vegetable garden; household plot”), that is arxa (“back [of the house]”) + -(n)c. Final -nc varies regularly with -c, compare e.g. Azerbaijani qılıc~qılınc (“sword”).
Alternatively, from Middle Mongol ᠠᠷᠭᠠᠮᠵᠢ (arɣamǰi); compare Khalkha Mongolian аргамж (argamž, “long rope for tying livestock for keeping to graze around”); Mongolic borrowings: Kyrgyz аргамжы (argamjı), Tajik арғамчин (arġamčin).
Cognate with the synonymous dialectal Turkish arkaç, argaç, arhaç, arḫaç.
