From Proto-Baltic *bērˀas, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerH-, *bʰērH- (shiny, light brown). Cognates include Lithuanian bėras (bay (of horses)), Proto-Germanic *berô (bear) (Old High German bëro, German Bär, English bear).[1]
