Etymology[edit]

Probably a variant of bụng (belly), with influence from bộng.

Attested as bạo᷄ in the Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum (1651), glossed with Portuguese barriga, Latin venter. The compound đau bạo᷄ (bellyache) is also listed.
