Etymology[edit]
Alteration of older bagħdam, probably from *bugħ(a)dam, from bu + għadam, literally “the one with the bones”, probably referring to its pellet. Għadam is here an obsolete plural from Arabic عِظام (ʕiẓām), which explains the final stress.
