From Proto-Tai *beːŋᴬ (expensive). Cognate with Thai แพง (pɛɛng), Northern Thai ᨻᩯ᩠ᨦ, Lao ແພງ (phǣng), ᦶᦗᧂ (paeng), Shan ပႅင်း (péng), Nong Zhuang biangz or byangz.
