besteedster f (plural besteedsters)

1. (historical) A woman working as an employment agent for maidservants or wetnurses, sometimes also for manservants.
   • 1773 January 18, De Denker, Vol. 11, No. 525, page 21, attributed to one "Meuwisje".

     Ik ben een besteedster van minnemoers, en kon met dat werkje ordentelyk aan den kost komen, maar zedert korten tyd hebben drie Mevrouwen, die me commissie hadden gegeven, om haar tegens haren kraam ieder eene minnemoer te bezorgen, het me op te laten zeggen, dewyl zy de kinderen zelf willen zuigen, en dus is dit profytie vervlogen.

     I am an employment agent for wetnurses, and could make a decent living with that job, but recently three ladies, who had given me commission to provide each of them with a wetnurse around the time of their childbirth, let me know it was cancelled, because they want to suckle the children themselves, and this profit has therefore gone away.

2. (dated) A family roof, an old-fashioned large model of umbrella made of cotton fabric (against rain).

     Van daar hadden zij een ouderwetsche parapluie, een zoogenaamde besteedster, in het schuitje medegenomen, welke den heeren bij de terugreis genoegzame beschutting verleende tegen den malschen regen, die op het onweder was gevolgd.

     Thence they had brought along an old-fashioned umbrella, a so-called family roof, into the boat, which provided to the gentlemen during the return journey adequate protection against the barmy rain that has followed the thunderstorm.
