Uncertain; possibly onomatopoeic, dating as early as Late Latin burdo, burdonis (“kind of grasshopper”), possibly from Frankish *buʀdō (“beetle, insect”), from Proto-Germanic *buzdô (“beetle, grub", literally, "swelling”), from *būs- (“to erupt, burst, flow rapidly”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰūs- (“to move quickly”).
