Etymology[edit]
Possibly West Saxon form of Anglian *breoðen, from Proto-West Germanic *broþ, from Proto-Germanic *bruþą (“broth”) + *-īną (diminutive suffix, literally “small brewing”), or from *bruþijaną (“to make a broth”) + *-īniz (noun-forming suffix). In either case, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrewh₁- (“to boil, brew”).
