English[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From Spanish carne (“meat”) + Spanish norte (“north”), likely referring to Spanish norteamericano (“North American”) as in "North American meat" since it was brought in during the 20th century in American colonial times. Compare Tagalog karne norte. Polistico (2017) mentions that it was probably a brand name.
