From Proto-Vietic *ɟɛh < *tʃ-r-ɛh, the *-r- (instrumental derivative) infixed form of Proto-Vietic *tʃɛh, whence Modern Vietnamese xỉa (to pick; to jab). Also related to Vietnamese nĩa (fork).
