Inherited from Middle French chirurgien, from Old French cirurgiien (see also Old French surgien, inherited through Vulgar Latin), or simply formed from the root of chirurgie, borrowed from Latin chīrūrgia, from chīrūrgus, from Ancient Greek χειρουργός (kheirourgós).
