Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic ковьчегъ (kovĭčegŭ), from Proto-Slavic *kovъčegъ, from Middle Mongol ᠬᠠᠭᠤᠷᠴᠠᠭ (qaɣurčag) presumably through a Turkic language. Compare Mongolian хуурцаг (xuurcag), Bulgarian ковчег (kovčeg), Serbo-Croatian kovčeg.
