From Proto-Tai *ɟɤːᴮ (name), from Early Middle Chinese (MC dziH, “courtesy name”). Cognate with Thai ชื่อ (chʉ̂ʉ), Northern Thai ᨩᩨ᩵, Isan ซื่อ, Lao ຊື່ (sư̄), ᦋᦹᧈ (tsue¹), Shan ၸိုဝ်ႈ (tsūe), Ahom 𑜋𑜢𑜤𑜈𑜫 (chüw) or 𑜋𑜥 (chū).
