Etymology[edit]
Attested since the 12th century, in Latin charters. Probably from a substrate language: compare Proto-Celtic *kruttos (Welsh crwth (“hump, hunch”)), and also Latvian krūts (“teat”), Lithuanian krūtìs (“breast”).
