Etymology 1

From Proto-Vietic *-toː. Cognate with Muong tô, Tho [Cuối Chăm] tɔː¹. Compare North Central Vietnamese đâu.

Compare also a tên chữ (“literary name”) of the Dâu temple, 古珠 (Cổ Châu), whose Old Chinese pronunciation can be reconstructed as *kâʔ-to (elements minimally reconstructed by Schuessler, 2009), which in turn suggests the presyllable *k-.
