Etymology[edit]

The phonetic elements in the Nôm characters used to write this word ( (MC duX), (MC du)) as well as the modern North Central form thỗ/thổ point to earlier form with *-d-. This word is unrelated to (MC yuwX) (SV: dụ), although the character appeared in latter Nôm texts as sound changes in the mainstream dialects caused the two to become similar enough for 誘 to be used as a phonetic element.
