Etymology[edit]

From Greater Central Philippine *daləgdəg (“thunder”), ultimately from Proto-Austronesian *dəʀdəʀ (thunder). Cognate with Aklanon daeugdog, Asi rayugrog, Cebuano dalugdog, Maranao dalendeg, Maguindanao dalendeg, and Tausug dawgdug. The current meaning comes from the ancient belief that thunder can be heard throughout the world, hence the term sandaigdigan, now shortened as daigdig, to refer to the entire world as a single area that the sound of thunder can reach.
