Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish ضلالت (dalalet, “being astray or lost; error”), from Arabic ضَلَالَة (ḍalāla), verbal noun of ضَلَّ (ḍalla, “to go astray; to lose”). The initial d is unusual; more often ض (ḍ) in Arabic becomes z when borrowed into in Turkish.
