From Persian دهقان (dehqân, “landowner”) From Middle Persian 𐭣𐭧𐭩𐭥𐭪𐭠𐭭 (dahigān, “countryman, farmer”), originally meaning “pertaining to the Deh”, from Middle Persian 𐭬𐭲𐭠 (deh, “country, land, village”).
