Etymology[edit]

From Proto-West Germanic *olibaum. Cognate with Old High German olibaum (German Ölbaum). Compare also Gothic 𐌰𐌻𐌴𐍅𐌰𐌱𐌰𐌲𐌼𐍃 (alēwabagms), which is almost the same but has a slightly different word for "oil." Equivalent to ele (oil) +‎ bēam (tree).
