From Ancient Greek ἐπίθετον (epítheton), neuter of ἐπίθετος (epíthetos, “attributed”), from ἐπιτίθημι (epitíthēmi, “add”), from ἐπι- (epi-, “upon”) + τίθημι (títhēmi, “to place”).
