From Middle English erisipila, borrowed from Latin erysipelas, from Ancient Greek ἐρῠσῐ́πελᾰς (erusípelas), probably related to ἐρῠθρός (eruthrós, red) and πέλμᾰ (pélma, the sole of a foot).
