From Old Galician-Portuguese espertar (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Vulgar Latin *expertare, from *expertus, from Latin experrectus (awoken), perfect passive participle of expergiscor (I awake, I wake up). Cognate with Portuguese despertar, espertar, Spanish despertar and Catalan despertar.
