Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old French forain, from Vulgar Latin *forānus (outsider), from Latin forīs (outside). Assimilated to foire (fair) (which is from Latin fēria) through folk etymology. Once meant "foreign", but replaced by étranger in this sense.
