Etymology[edit]
From Late Latin frondia n pl, a collective noun derived from Classical Latin frondeus (“leafy”). Same source as Old Italian fronza (“leafy branch; green leaf of a wheat plant”), which might have influenced the quality of the stressed vowel[1] (compare Logudorese frunza, with a closed stressed vowel).
