Inherited from Proto-Germanic *firnijaz, *fernaz (foregoing, previous), from Proto-Indo-European *per- (forth, forward, across, through). Cognate with Old High German firni (old), Old Norse forn (old), Gothic 𐍆𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌽𐌴𐌹𐍃 (fairneis, old).
