Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Chagatai غیر, from Persian غیرـ (ğeyr-e-), from Arabic غَيْر (ḡayr) + Persian ezafe. Cognate with Azerbaijani qeyri-, Turkish gayri- (Ottoman Turkish غیر (gayr-i)), Uyghur غەيرى (gheyri).
