Vietnamese[edit]

Pronunciation[edit]

Etymology 1[edit]

Compare Proto-Katuic *ʔŋgaak (whence Pacoh acec (branch)).

In spite of superficial resemblance, this word is not a descendant of Chinese (MC kaewk, “horn”) (SV: giác), which had a very different vowel during the Old Chinese period, while later forms disagree with Vietnamese gạc in terms of voicing and (lack the) environment for lenition.
