From Proto-Germanic *gasakaną, equivalent to gi- +‎ sahhan. Third plural past indicative attested on the late 500s Pforzen buckle as ᚷᚨᛊᛟᚲᚢᚾ (gasokun /⁠gasōkun⁠/).
