Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Proto-Slavic *gnobiti. According to Pokorny, possibly ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gnet-; compare Proto-Slavic *gnesti (“to press”), Proto-Germanic *knudaną. Cognate with Russian гнобить (gnobitʹ).
