French[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From a derivative of greer, agreer (“to rig, equip”), from Anglo-Norman agreier (“to equip, equip a ship with tackle”), from a- + *greier, from Old Norse greida (“to put in order, prepare, arrange”), from Proto-Germanic *garaidijaną (“to prepare, put in order”), from Proto-Indo-European *reydʰ- (“to put in order, make comfortable”). Cognate with Old English ġerǣdan (“to arrange, assist”), Middle High German gereiten (“to arrange, prepare”), Middle Dutch gereide (“equipment, harness”). More at ready.
