Etymology[edit]

Ultimately from Proto-Slavic *grabǫšnęš (a mythological snake that drinks from cattle udders). Compare Serbo-Croatian grabonos. Topalli suggests that the final -ofç is derived from an optative verbal suffix.[1][2]

  1. a large mythological serpent with two heads
