From Proto-West Germanic *grīpan, whence also Old Saxon, Old Dutch, Old English grīpan, and outside of West Germanic, Old Norse grípa, Gothic 𐌲𐍂𐌴𐌹𐍀𐌰𐌽 (greipan).
