From Proto-Balto-Slavic *gulbis, according to Pokorny, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰelh₃- (to flourish, shine, be joyful).[1]

Balto-Slavic cognates include dialectal Lithuanian gulbis, Latvian gùlbis (swan), Old Prussian gulbis (swan), Proto-Slavic *gъlbь.
