From Proto-Albanian *ksandā, from pre-Albanian *skandneh₂, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kand- (to shine) (compare Welsh can (white), Latin candeō (I shine, gleam), Sanskrit चन्द्र (candrá, shining; moon)). One might also consider a connection to Ancient Greek ἕνος (hénos, old) and Latin annus (year).
