Etymology[edit]

Equivalent to hefaen +‎ rīċe, possibly as a calque of Latin regnum caelōrum. Cognate with Old Saxon hevanrīki, Old High German himilrīhhi (German Himmelreich), Old Norse himinnrīki (Danish himmerige).
